Rear brake pads/shoes should be replaced when they become worn. As the pads/shoes wear out their efficiency in stopping become greatly reduced and stopping distances increased. Also their ability to hold the car on gradients becomes greatly reduced; this would be noticed by having to pull the handbrake on even more that usual. Replacing these makes sure that your braking system operates correctly and in a safe manner.
